Dragonfly
We found her in our garden, sitting on very exposed position. Must have died just recently, no way we would miss her sitting there for long.
I’ve decided to make a box for preserving her. I have an old, huge magnifying glass which would serve as viewfinder.
I started with cutting the cavity. I wish I had a lathe, this would be trivial then.
I used circular blade to cut the shape and give me clean reference when I remove material with the router.
At some point it was too deep to continue with the router so I continued carving with chisels.
Rough shape with saw and spokeshave cuts.
Centre hole, left by the circular saw, was plugged with mahogany plug. Then came sanding and final shaping.
Brass hooks formed to serve as supports for magnifying glass.
The lid and holder for glass will be made of leather. I use pieces of old & worn military bag. Leather is thick enough to hold heavy glass and keep it in place.
Sanded with fine-grid paper, to give it suede texture.
Internal circle was punched out, to have dragon-teeth on the edge.
Shaping teeth.
Oiling
Assembly with copper nails.
I wanted them to look like rivets so I formed their heads with riveting hammer.
Final oiling and the box is done.
