Companion table
We need a small coffee table - or companion table - to fit our tiny house. I have teak rests after making table for Tze so I’ve decided to use them to build another one.
Started with truing the table top and removing wood finish.
I scraped the bottom part with scrub plane. It leaves deep, rounded grooves which I like. It makes also job very quickly and effortlessly.
Since the table will be long and narrow I want to make it look wider by having legs on the side. They will be screwed and glued to the tabletop.
I’ve made a pattern to transfer hole placement onto each component. Marking with pointy screw and magic-marker.
Leg caps will be made of American walnut. It matches tone of teak but it’s darker brown colour will make these legs look more cocky and separate.
I could have chosen just gluing pieces of walnut on top of each leg but that would be too simple. Instead I decided to make caps which will be press-fit into legs’ cavity, giving me possibility to access screws.
Instead of making each of 4 blocks exactly fitting specific cavity I’ve cut 4, slightly smaller blocks of pine and mounted 3 screws in each block. These screws will give me possibility to fine-tune the assembly to specific leg’s cavity.
After glue set all blocks could be mounted and trimmed to match specific leg.
Plugged old screw holes on the bottom face and sanded all components for the final assembly.
WEST G-Flex will be used to glue legs. Its elasticity and strength, reinforced with 2 thick screw per leg, should do the job well.
All taped, rough-sanded and cleaned with acetone before spreading the glue.
I want these legs to look as if just standing on the side of table top.
I keep glue joint only in the middle as each leg is slightly rounded - after tightening screws the joint will not close on edges, I don’t want to have glue fillet visible there.
Assembled all legs and the tiny table stands on its own already. Leg caps not yet pressed in - they need some final shaping.
Hand-sanded and adjusted screw fitting on capping assemblies - after mounting legs to tabletop the shape of cavity in each leg has changed a bit. For press-fit capping bits this already made a difference.
Oiled with Owatrol to give satin look.
Ready for service.
